10 uses for coconut oil

  1. Night time moisturizer! Put it on your face, body, hands, etc. It’s greasy, so night time use is best. A little goes a long way so test out just a little to make sure to test out a little to see how your skin likes it first. Best to do after a hot shower when your skin is going to absorb better.

  2. Lip balm. This you can do during the day to, just a light layer to moisturize your lips.

  3. Leave in split end conditioner: take a small amount and rub in your palms and then gently rub onto the ends of your hair, but only the ends other wise it will be too heavy and weigh down your hair.

  4. Conditioning treatment; if you want to put it in all your hair, you can apply a decent amount and leave on for 5-10 minutes depending on the dryness of your hair. Do it while you take a bath or do a face mask. Multitask! Rinse with warm water.

  5. Cuticle moisturizer! Carry a small jar or container with coconut oil and use for cuticles or a hand moisturizer.

  6. Use as a carrier oil for essentials oils like peppermint, jasmine, lavender, etc. This can be done to make your hair smell good or your skin smell good while moisturizing too.

  7. Oil pulling! This is an ancient Ayurvedic dental technique that involves swishing a tablespoon of oil in your mouth on an empty stomach for around 20 minutes. I like to use coconut oil because it tastes better than olive oil, etc. Oil pulling draws out toxins and can improve oral health but also can improve overall health. This technique can prevent bleeding gums, decay, dryness of throat, bad breath, cracked lips; it can strengthening teeth, gums and the jaw. It may be able to reduce inflammation too.

  8. Body Scrub - I add some left over coffee grinds or brown sugar to coconut oil and mix it up and then use it on my body in the shower to exfoliate and moisturize my skin. It’s a little messy but the results feel great!

  9. Add a teaspoon or 2 of coconut oil to your coffee. Not only is this good for your skin but it’s a variation on Bulletproof coffee. It can help decrease appetite, and help brain function. It also tastes delicious.

  10. Last but not least: cook with coconut oil. Coconut oil can withstand higher heat when cooking and that means less burning of food which as you know brunt food can cause free radicals i.e.; increase risk of cancer. I think that food tastes better when cooking in coconut oil as well.

Honorable mention: Adding a little coconut oil to dark chocolate with a sprinkle of sea salt is a delicious dessert. Dark chocolate (try 70 percent cacao or higher) is high in antioxidants, contains some iron and can curb your desire to eat more sugary foods. The coconut oil and sea salt gives it an extra boost of flavor and a rich texture.
